Surrey City Orchestra is a new professional orchestra that will be celebrating its inaugural season this year. Based in the City of Surrey, the orchestra will be featuring musicians who call Surrey home, as well as promoting cross culture collaboration through music. Led by conductor Stuart Martin, they recently performed alongside Grammy Award winner Ricky Kej at the 10th Anniversary of Surrey Fusion Festival. This year they will be performing several concerts including Handel’s Messiah with Kwantlen Polytechnic University Chorus on December 1st at Fleetwood Christian Reform Church.

About Stuart Martin

Stuart Martin is one of Canada’s new emerging artists. Known for conducting and producing operas in found spaces, he is determined to expand the possibilities of classical music. Stuart began his training on the piano and cello, and during his time at University of British Columbia, he began studying orchestral conducting. In 2013 Stuart was an assistant conductor at Opera NUOVA, and that is where his love of opera began. He met Jessica Derventzis, a director, and together they formed Stu&Jess Productions. They went on to produce The Medium, Le Docteur Miracle, and L’heure Espagnole. They were then hired together at NUOVA for the Canadian Premiere of Ned Rorem’s Our Town. In 2016 he returned to NUOVA for Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi and in February Stu&Jess are producing Britten’s Turn of the Screw in Toronto.

Stuart has also worked with Vancouver Academy of Music as an opera coach and conductor for their 2014-15 year. He completed his Masters in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2017 under the guidance of Donald Schleicher. During his time at UIUC he was the Assistant Conductor of the University of Illinois Symphony Orchestra and guest conducted several local ensembles. This year Stuart is the Music Director and Conductor of the inaugural season of Surrey City Orchestra.
